The Chigot window has been on display at TMA in the Glass Pavillion for many years. It's location is now to be changed so that the work can be displayed in context with other types of artworks, including paintings and works of art on paper. Due to the sensitivity of these other works, the display of the window will shift from the GP cavity to an enclosed gallery. A bespoke backlit frame will be commissioned which will allow the long term interior display of the work, allowing for flexibility in display location. These backlit frames are extremely high quality and add to the stability of the piece overall, creating a rigid support structure. To prepare the window for the frame and for display, select areas of the structural putty/cement will be removed and replaced. The putty/cement is a material that is applied to the work at the end of the creation process, to aid in adhering the leads to the pieces of glass. The material degrades over time by becoming brittle and cracking, particularly in areas where it is exposed to the elements. On the Chigot window, the putty/cement present on the cross braces is brittle, cracking, and flaking, and needs to be removed and replaced. The window will also be cleaned to ensure all surfaces are free from grime and hand oils.
