Celebrate International Women's Day at TMA with two noteworthy films by women filmmakers. Released in the same year, these films seemingly could not be more different—a grounded documentary following four generations of Palestinian women and a fantastical blockbuster based on a bestselling fashion doll. However, these films carry a similar mission, telling two different stories about women from the perspective of female directors. Together, these films celebrate the creative drive of women in the film industry, providing just a small taste of the many women-centered stories captured on film, as well as the many stories still to come.
This event is co-organized by the Toledo Museum of Art's Women & Allies Employee Resource Group (ERG) in honor of International Women's Day. Celebrate International Women's Day at TMA by attending this experience and other offerings at the Museum on Saturday, March 8, 2025.
About The Films
Bye Bye Tiberias
Directed by Lina Soualem (France, Palestine, Belgium, and Qatar, 2023, 82 min.).
Language: English
An intimate documentary exploring four generations of Palestinian women through archival material, family home video, and a contemporary lens. As a young woman Hiam Abbass (Emmy-nominated for Succession; The Lemon Tree; Ramy; Blade Runner) left her Palestinian village to pursue an acting career abroad. Thirty years later her daughter, Lina Soualem, returns with Abbass to explore her mother's former home and the complicated histories of four generations of women grappling with love, history, and separation. This film won multiple awards upon its release, including the Grierson Award at the BFI London Film Festival and won the shared jury prize at the Marrakech International Film Festival in 2023.
Barbie
Directed by Greta Gerwig (American, 2023, 114 min.)
Language: English
The highest grossing film of 2023 and the highest-grossing film ever released by Warner Bros., Barbie follows the pink, plastic life of Barbie (Margot Robbie), one of many high achieving Barbies living in Barbie Land amongst some beach-loving Kens (and Alan). Increasingly, Barbie finds that she doesn't seem to fit the perfect world she's always known. Combining comedy and heart, this star-studded film sees Barbie ask, and answer, the question, “what was I made for?”
Drop in to view either of these films, no registration required.
