The Artist’s New Tools: Art, Code & Generative Systems

Saturday, July 12 | 11:30a.m.–12:30p.m. |  Great Gallery

No Registration Required

no passcode required

Curious about how artists work with code, generative systems, and AI to create their work? In this panel discussion, four artists whose work is featured in the exhibition Infinite Images: The Art of Algorithms will join TMA’s director, Dr. Adam Levine, for an in-depth look at their processes and practices.

Dive into the fascinating world of generative art, where the artist creates a visual system (effectively, instructions) that may produce a near-infinite number of combinations. While artists have used mathematical principles and rule-based systems to create their work for centuries, today’s digital artists use code as their paintbrush and the computer as their collaborator to explore new aesthetic possibilities.

In this panel, we’ll explore: What is generative art? How do artists use generative systems to create their work? Is generative art the same thing as artificial intelligence? What are the unique affordances of working with generative systems?

We invite you to be part of this pivotal moment in art history during the celebratory opening weekend of Infinite Images: The Art of Algorithms, on view through Sunday, November 30, 2025.

This event is free. Registration is not required. Guests will be admitted on a first-come, first-served basis until the venue reaches capacity.

Tickets for the exhibition can be purchased below.

This conversation will be moderated by Dr. Adam M. Levine, Edward Drummond and Florence Scott Libbey President, Director, and CEO of the Toledo Museum of Art.

Dr. Levine is a scholar of ancient art and a transformative leader with a deep conviction that art inspires and museums are change agents. He became the eleventh director of the Toledo Museum of Art in 2020, bringing a dynamic vision to one of the nation’s most respected art institutions. A Rhodes Scholar, Dr. Levine earned his master’s degree with distinction and DPhil in the history of art from the University of Oxford following his summa cum laude graduation from Dartmouth College. His leadership has been marked by innovative strategies that have expanded the museum’s reach and impact.
