Calvin Burchfiel is a creative technologist and systems strategist bridging artistic expression, emerging technology, and cultural connection. As part of TMA Labs at the Toledo Museum of Art, Calvin helps guide the institution into a more dynamic future—spearheading initiatives such as a groundbreaking digital artist residency program and the thoughtful integration of evolving technologies like blockchain, AI, and XR. He balances refining existing systems with exploring new frontiers. Calvin approaches institutional change with a holistic lens—evaluating infrastructure, workflows, and audience needs. His goal is to ensure that technology deepens the Museum’s ability to connect with people in meaningful, resonant ways.

Calvin’s career spans global impact and local restoration. He has introduced thousands of individuals and startups to Web3 technologies—demystifying NFTs, DAOs, and decentralized systems to expand creative opportunity. As an artist living in Japan for eight years, he helped revitalize Yokohama’s Koganecho district through socially engaged arts programming and community-driven events. In Birmingham, Alabama, he was an early contributor to Jones Valley Teaching Farm, supporting its development into a nationally recognized model for education-centered urban agriculture. Calvin has also curated international art exhibitions and led programs that engage the public with new technologies. These experiences reflect his ongoing dedication to creating human-centered approaches that honor culture, deepen community relationships, and adapt to real-world needs.

Fluent in Japanese and the dynamics of both creative practice and entrepreneurship, Calvin brings a distinctive perspective to every project he undertakes. His background spans startups, international business, digital curation, emerging technologies, and experimental artmaking—informing how he understands and builds across systems, culture, and community.
