The Toledo Museum of Art is refreshing the way you experience art. For the first time in more than 40 years, we’re reimagining our galleries — the spaces where stories of art, culture, and creativity unfold.
This transformation is about more than updating walls or lighting. It’s about creating a Museum experience that reflects the world we live in today: more welcoming, more connected, and more inspiring for every visitor.

On December 15, 2025, The Great Gallery and Galleries 22, 23, 24, 26, 27, 32, 33, and 34 closed for renovation.
Galleries 29 and 31 are already closed.
Levis Gallery closed after Rachel Ruysch: Nature Into Art ended on July 27, 2025.
Impressionism works are temporarily off view and traveling (they’ll return in the re-installed galleries).
Cloister Gallery remains closed (it will be back!).

We’re designing galleries that guide you through a journey from ancient civilizations to today’s creative voices. You’ll see familiar favorites alongside new discoveries with stories that reveal the global connections between artists, ideas, and cultures.
Historic spaces like The Cloister will be carefully preserved and refreshed, honoring the Museum’s architectural heritage while making room for new perspectives and experiences.
We’re expanding the narrative to highlight a wider range of artists, communities, and creative traditions, all while showcasing how the story of art reflects many voices, both global and local. This commitment to inclusivity extends beyond artists themselves to the materials, mediums, and geographic regions represented throughout our collection.
Community engagement is central to this project. To date, we’ve worked alongside 1,492 community members throughout this project whose insights and feedback guide our decisions and keeps community at the heart of our work.
Upgraded lighting, climate control, and restrooms will make the Museum more comfortable and accessible for all visitors, so everyone can enjoy art in a welcoming environment.
Together, these updates ensure that the Toledo Museum of Art remains a place of wonder, reflection, and connection — inspiring generations to come.
You’ll soon be able to explore art history as a journey that flows through the Museum — from ancient civilizations to modern creativity. The new layout will make it easier to see how different cultures and time periods have inspired one another, creating a more meaningful and immersive visit.
One exciting update involves The Cloister, one of TMA’s most beloved architectural spaces. By moving it closer to Classic Court, visitors will be able to experience ancient and medieval art in dialogue with modern works, bridging centuries of creativity in one seamless experience. The Cloister’s next chapter will preserve its beauty while enhancing its accessibility and presence for years to come.
Behind the scenes, TMA’s curators, designers, and educators are working collaboratively to make this transformation possible while rethinking how each gallery can better serve our community and celebrate the depth of our collection.
