Sarah Meyohas is a conceptual artist and pioneer in the field of crypto art. Her work has been exhibited in New York at Red Bull Arts, 303 Gallery, and the New Museum and internationally at institutions including the Barbican Centre, the Centre Pompidou, and the Ming Contemporary Art Museum in Shanghai. She is represented by Marianne Boesky Gallery and by the United Talent Agency for her work in film. In 2015 Meyohas created Bitchcoin, a cryptocurrency backed by her physical artwork that questioned the speculative value of cryptocurrency and the ineffable value of art. Predating the launch of Ethereum, Bitchcoin was the first tokenization of physical art on a blockchain—effectively, a proto-NFT (non-fungible token). Today, Meyohas continues to investigate emerging technologies with familiar emblems of biological life: soaring birds, created using augmented-reality software, flock in unison with the frenetic variations of the stock market; rose petals, identical in the aggregate but individually unique, comprise the data set for their AI-created equivalents. Meyohas’s practice provides an intelligible visual language to articulate the systems and complex operations that increasingly govern our world.
