Seleucid, from Persia, Rhyton (Drinking Vessel) with the Forepart of a Zebu. Silver with sheet gilding, 200–100 BCE. Length: 16 7/8 in. (42.8 cm). Purchased with funds from the Libbey Endowment, Gift of Edward Drummond Libbey, 1988.23.

Speaker: Dr. Matthew Canepa, Professor of Art History & Archaeology, University of California, Irvine

Join us for a fascinating lecture exploring how luxury materials shaped elite identities in the lands of the former Achaemenid Persian Empire and its Central and Southern Asian borderlands after Alexander the Great. Discover how new traditions of royal display and precious drinking vessels emerged under the Seleucid and Arsacid dynasties; cultures represented in the Toledo Museum of Art’s collection, and how these practices bridged the Hellenistic and Iranian worlds.

This program is the first memorial lecture honoring Robert Finkel, past president of the AIA-Toledo Society. Admission is free, courtesy of the Toledo Museum of Art.
