The Toledo Museum of Art and TMA Labs are thrilled to showcase Handiwork, Shadow Play, the first digital artwork by Jordan Buschur, the museum’s 2024 Community Digital Artist in Residence. Buschur’s art is rooted in painting human presence through accumulated collections: books, mementos, and other quotidian objects. In this residency, she has partnered with Yatreda to expand her practice into digital art and the Web3 environment. Their collaboration emerged from a shared interest in the objects that surround us and the collective memories they hold.

Overview
As a cultural hub and incubator for creative talent, the Toledo Museum of Art (TMA) continues its commitment to the Toledo community by welcoming Jordan Buschur as the 2024 Community Digital Artist in Residence. Buschur's artistic practice revolves around portraying human presence through accumulated collections of familiar objects, such as books and keepsakes.
During her residency, Buschur created Handiwork, Shadow Play, a digital artwork that centers on an anonymous book—both as a vessel of knowledge and a symbol of human touch. The book alternates between two states: one bearing the imprint of a hand and the other bare, inviting viewers to contemplate what’s revealed, what remains hidden, and the stories embedded in objects. The slow, rhythmic transition, timed to mirror the pace of breathing, nods to Yatreda’s evocative slow-motion imagery. In her debut NFT drop, Buschur bridges the tactile and digital, evoking curiosity about the quiet, often overlooked power of everyday objects.

2024 Digital Artist in Residence Program: Community, Local and Global
The Toledo Museum of Art and TMA Labs proudly present the 2024 Digital Artist in Residence Program, featuring the work of Ethiopian digital art collective Yatreda and Toledo-based artist Jordan Buschur. Launched in 2023, TMA’s Digital Artist in Residence Program offers artists from around the world a platform to hone their craft and focus on creation with the resources of the TMA at their disposal. This residency seeks to encourage conversation on how the twenty-first-century art museum can support digital artwork and expand its community.
Both Buschur and Yatreda have drawn inspiration from the local community, Toledo Museum of Art, and Ethiopia at the Crossroads exhibition to create new digital art collections. These works will be released (“dropped”) throughout the exhibition’s run. The culmination of their residency with TMA Labs includes the release of unique, one-of-one digital artworks available for sale through Christie’s.
