Local Artist Brenda Singletary Showcases Evocative Abstract Paintings in Upcoming Exhibition at TMA

Opening Reception with the Artist Will Be Held Aug. 2

July 24, 2024

Local artist Brenda Singletary offers an intimate glimpse of her heritage, culture and life experiences with a collection of abstract paintings that will be exhibited in “Reflections of Spirit” July 31-Oct. 20 in the Robert C. and Susan Savage Community Gallery at the Toledo Museum of Art.

Rooted in generational memories and personal journeys, Singletary's art spans a spectrum of emotions from profound loss to jubilant celebration. Vibrant colors swirl and dance across each piece, creating abstract forms that evoke a sense of openness and freedom.

“More than just a personal narrative, this body of works invites viewers to explore their own emotions and perceptions,” said Singletary.

The mixed media compositions reveal hidden stories and unspoken truths, paying homage to the resilience and beauty of humanity. The layers of materials intertwine to express stories and generational memory such as the lasting impacts of the African American community’s historical experiences in the U.S.

The exhibition includes an interactive experience where visitors can engage in an artmaking activity, fostering a deeper connection with the art.

An artist reception that is free and open to the public will be held Friday, Aug. 2, 5-7 p.m., in the Robert C. and Susan Savage Community Gallery. The reception will include remarks from the artist and refreshments.

The Robert C. and Susan Savage Community Gallery is sponsored in part by Huntington Bank and the Toledo Museum of Art Ambassadors.
